Global Shipping Guidelines

The world of cross-border trading has evolved significantly in recent years, so providing the correct customs data is more important than ever.

Electronic customs pre-advice data

It is now mandatory to provide electronic customs pre-advice data and an S10 barcode when you ship abroad. You are also required to provide a CN22, CN23 or commercial invoice (depending on the service used) and the information electronically in the pre-advice you send to us.

If you do not provide this information you risk penalties and delays or items being returned, but our shipping platform is data-compliant and automates this process to take the stress out of electronic customs.

This is a mandatory requirement for cross-border shipping, no matter which provider you use.

Customs clearance options

Customs paid at destination and customs prepaid options are available. Contact us for full details.

We want to inform you about changes to Swiss VAT regulations that may affect your business operations, in January 2025.

Current VAT Rules (2019 - 2024)

Since January 1st, 2019, foreign suppliers delivering small consignments to Switzerland have been required to register for Swiss VAT if their total sales of these shipments exceed 100,000 CHF annually.

What's Changing on January 1, 2025?

From January 1st, 2025, Digital Platforms/Marketplaces will be held responsible for deliveries of small consignments, rather than the individual suppliers.

Implications of These Changes

If a digital platform’s turnover from small consignments in Switzerland exceeds 100,000 CHF, it must register for Swiss VAT the following month. Upon registration, the platform will:

1. Act as the Importer
  • Platforms will be treated as the importer of goods into Switzerland.
2. Charge VAT
  • VAT must be charged on all deliveries within Switzerland.
  • VAT will apply to all supplies of goods from abroad to B2C customers in Switzerland, regardless of value.
3. Handle Import Taxes
  • Platforms will be required to pay applicable import taxes. However, they can generally defer payment by declaring it in their VAT returns, helping to minimise cash flow impacts.

For Suppliers Using Digital Platforms

Suppliers who rely on digital platforms and do not meet the Swiss VAT registration threshold themselves will no longer be required to register for VAT.

We recommend reviewing your business setup and consulting with a tax advisor to understand how these changes may impact your operations.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Account Manager directly.

From 1st January, new legislation will be introduced in Germany requiring all parcels to display the weight of the parcel on the label if over 10kg or 20kg.

Asendia UK will automatically include this data on the final mile label applied during processing.

For Global customers, the label will be returned with the relevant information based on declared weight.

Please see below example:

Germany Label Weight 121224
